Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 1 – brain signal recording study):

• People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease that developed on its own (not caused by another condition)
• People whose Parkinson's disease is rated at a moderate to moderately-severe level of severity (stages 2–4 on a standard scale), measured when not taking Parkinson's medication

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 2 – brain surgery study):

• People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease that developed on its own
• People for whom their doctor has determined that a type of brain stimulation surgery (called Deep Brain Stimulation, or DBS) is medically appropriate
• People whose pre-surgery brain scan (MRI) came back normal
• People who are able to remain awake during a type of brain surgery that uses fine needle recordings to guide placement

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 3 – existing DBS device study):

• People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease that developed on its own
• People who already have a working DBS brain stimulation device implanted

For healthy volunteers (no Parkinson's diagnosis):

• People aged between 45 and 75 years old

Who may not be able to join:

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 1):

• People whose Parkinson's causes severe shaking or severe uncontrolled movements that would interfere with brain signal recordings
• People who are unable to temporarily stop taking their Parkinson's medications for the research recordings
• People who have dementia
• People who do not speak English

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 2):

• People who have a blood clotting disorder
• People who have high blood pressure that is not well controlled
• People who have heart disease
• People who have other health conditions that the medical team considers would increase the risk of complications from surgery

For people with Parkinson's disease (Study Aim 3):

• People whose Parkinson's causes severe shaking or severe uncontrolled movements that would interfere with brain signal recordings
• People who are unable to temporarily stop taking their Parkinson's medications for the research recordings
• People who are unable to tolerate having their DBS device temporarily turned off or having its settings changed for research purposes
• People who have other health conditions that the medical team considers would increase the risk of surgical complications

For healthy volunteers:

• People who have a history of a neurological or psychiatric condition, or who have been treated with medications that affect mood or mental health
• People who do not speak English
