Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 20 to 90 years old
- People who are able to give informed consent to take part in the study
- People who have neuropathic pain and/or abnormal sensory symptoms (such as numbness, tingling, or unusual sensations) caused by either a peripheral nerve condition (confirmed by nerve or skin tests) or a stroke that affected the sensory pathways in the brain (confirmed by brain imaging)
- People who are willing to avoid caffeine, alcohol, tea, and medications that significantly affect the nervous system for 48 hours before each study session
Who may not be able to join:
- People with serious body-wide illnesses, such as severe heart disease, severe heart failure, severe lung disease causing breathing difficulties, severe widespread fluid retention (swelling), or an active widespread infection
- People with major brain or nervous system conditions, such as a brain tumour, significant head injury, or an infection or inflammation affecting the nervous system
- People with major depression or other significant mental health disorders
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker, a brain stimulator, aneurysm clips, or metal implants in the head, unless those devices have been certified as safe for MRI scans
- People who are pregnant
- People with claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or any other reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan
- People who are unable to give informed consent
