Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who have persistent atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm that has lasted more than 7 days)
- People whose heart condition and health history place them at a moderate-to-high risk of stroke, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool called CHA2DS2-VASc (score of 2 or higher)
- People who meet at least one of the following: long-term blood thinning medication is not considered suitable for them; they experienced a stroke or blood clot even while taking blood thinning medication as directed; their risk of bleeding is rated as high by a standard medical scoring tool called HAS-BLED (score of 3 or higher); or they are unwilling to take long-term blood thinning medication
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation by targeting the heart's electrical pathways (ablation)
- People whose heart ultrasound shows that a specific chamber of the heart (the left atrium) is larger than 60 mm across
- People whose persistent atrial fibrillation has lasted longer than 10 years
- People who are already scheduled for a heart surgery
- People who have a blood clot or other structural problem in the upper left chamber of the heart that would prevent the procedure from being safely performed (confirm with trial site)
- People whose life expectancy is less than 1 year
