Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have clinically elevated anxiety (based on a standard questionnaire score) or moderate-to-severe depression (based on a standard questionnaire score)
• Your anxiety or depression is causing a moderate or greater impact on your social life, as rated by a clinician
• Your natural drive to seek out rewarding experiences scores below the average range on a standard personality questionnaire
• You are between 18 and 50 years old
• You are able to read and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
• You are proficient in English

Who may not be able to join:

• You are currently considered to be at imminent risk of suicide, have had serious suicidal thoughts or plans in the past month, or have made a suicide attempt in the past year
• You have a history of bipolar disorder or any psychotic disorder (such as schizophrenia)
• You have a history of a significant neurological condition or a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury
• You have a serious or unstable physical health condition (such as heart, liver, kidney, breathing, hormonal, blood, or seizure disorders) that could be affected by taking part
• You have had a substance use disorder of any kind in the past 6 months (except mild alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use disorder, which is allowed)
• You have a history of impulse control problems, such as problem gambling
• A close biological relative (parent, sibling, or child) has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, another psychotic disorder, or bipolar disorder
• You have used cocaine or stimulant drugs (such as amphetamines or methamphetamine) in the past 6 months, unless they were prescribed by a doctor
• You have used certain dopamine-related medications (such as pramipexole or ropinirole) in the past 6 months
• A urine drug test at screening comes back positive for non-prescribed substances (THC is an exception)
• You have abnormal blood test results, liver or kidney markers, or heart test (ECG) results that a doctor considers clinically significant
• You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant within the next 6 months; people who could become pregnant must agree to use an approved form of contraception starting at least 21 days before the first dose and for 3 months after the last dose
• You are currently receiving an evidence-based talking therapy for anxiety or depression, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
• You have taken any psychiatric medication (such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications) within the past 14 days before starting the study (or within 30 days for fluoxetine specifically); these medications cannot be used during the study either
• You are unlikely to be able to attend study appointments regularly
• You are unlikely to be able to complete all study procedures, as judged by study staff
• You have other clinical concerns that require more urgent care, such as self-harm or exposure to a severe traumatic event in the past week
• You have vision or hearing problems that cannot be corrected, as some study tasks require these senses to be working
• You do not have access to a telephone
• You have any medical reason why you cannot have an MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
• Your overall illness severity is rated as extremely severe by a clinician (based on a standard rating scale)
