Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Children aged 7 to 12 years old
  • Children who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, or Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified — or children who have no current mental health diagnosis at all
  • Children who are living with a parent or guardian who is willing to take part in the study
  • Children and parents/guardians who are willing and able to give their agreement to participate
  • The participating parent must be the child's biological parent, or a grandparent acting as a parent, who has lived with the child for more than 75% of the child's life
  • The participating parent must not currently be pregnant
  • The participating parent must be able to read and understand consent forms
  • All participants must be proficient in English

Who may not be able to join:

  • Children who have a condition that could interfere with taking part, such as autism spectrum disorder, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or a current substance use problem
  • Children who are currently taking any psychiatric or mood-related medications, including antidepressants
  • Children or parents who have reasons they cannot safely have an MRI scan, such as metal implants inside the body, braces, cochlear implants, or claustrophobia
  • Children with severe behavioural difficulties that have led to involvement with juvenile justice or child protective services
  • Children or their primary caregivers who do not speak English
