Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have been recommended to have a routine screening colonoscopy (and possibly a throat/stomach scope) as part of your normal medical care — this includes healthy people as well as those with neurological or autoimmune conditions
- OR you are willing to have a colonoscopy (and possibly a throat/stomach scope) specifically for the purposes of this research study
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently pregnant (women who could potentially be pregnant will be asked to take a urine pregnancy test before the procedure)
- You have been diagnosed with, or are suspected to have, a long-term inflammatory bowel condition, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- You have a known active or ongoing infection of any kind
- You have taken antibiotic pills or IV antibiotics within the last 3 months
- You have taken steroid medications (such as prednisone at a moderate-to-high dose) for more than 5 days within the last 2 weeks
- You have been diagnosed with or treated for cancer within the last 5 years
- You have taken probiotic supplements within the last 2 weeks
- You have had major surgery on your digestive system in the past, such as removal of part of the colon or gastric bypass surgery
- You have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medications
- You have another medical condition that the study doctor believes would make taking a small tissue sample (biopsy) riskier than normal (confirm with trial site)
- You have a known allergy to the type of sedation or other medications typically used during this kind of procedure
