Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 18 and 65 years of age
  • People who report low or moderate levels of physical activity, as measured by a standard physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ)
  • People who have previously been diagnosed with high blood pressure, or whose resting blood pressure reading is between 130 and 179 mmHg at the screening appointment
  • People who are either not taking any blood pressure medication, or who have been on the same blood pressure medication without any changes for at least the past 4 months
  • People whose diet, physical activity habits, and any supplements taken have stayed roughly the same over the past 4 months

Who may not be able to join:

  • People under 18 or over 65 years of age
  • People whose resting blood pressure is 180/110 mmHg or higher, or whose resting heart rate is above 100 beats per minute at the baseline appointment
  • People with a known heart or blood vessel condition, such as a history of stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, peripheral vascular disease, or advanced eye damage related to high blood pressure
  • People with Type 1 diabetes
  • People with a history of other ongoing conditions, including certain cancers, neurological conditions (such as multiple sclerosis), or respiratory conditions (such as COPD)
  • People for whom exercise is not considered safe, based on their answers to a standard physical activity readiness questionnaire
  • People with physical limitations that would prevent them from doing handgrip exercises, such as arthritis or other joint or muscle conditions
  • People who score "high" on the standard physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ)
  • People taking more than 2 blood pressure medications, or who have had a change in their blood pressure treatment in the past 4 months
  • People currently taking nitrate medication (often prescribed for chest pain/angina) or hormone replacement therapy
  • People who have made significant changes to their lifestyle in the past 4 months, such as following a planned weight loss diet
