Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are between 18 and 45 years old
- People who are able to understand and agree to participate in the study (give informed consent)
- People who are pregnant with one baby (not twins or more)
- People who are planning to give birth at Turku University Hospital
- People whose pre-pregnancy or early pregnancy body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) is below 40
- People whose pregnancy dates have been confirmed by an ultrasound scan during the first trimester
- For the control group only: people who had a normal blood sugar test (a test for gestational diabetes) between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose baby has been found to have a significant chromosomal, genetic, or physical abnormality
- People whose baby is growing too slowly, or whose baby's birth weight is below the 10th percentile (smaller than 90% of babies at the same stage)
- For the control group only: people whose baby's birth weight is above the 90th percentile (larger than 90% of babies), or people with too much amniotic fluid around the baby
- People whose baby is showing signs of distress that need urgent treatment, or where the baby has sadly passed away in the womb
- People whose baby has been confirmed to have certain infections, such as cytomegalovirus, toxoplasma, or hepatitis B or C (note: a specific type of bacterial infection during labour may not automatically exclude participation — confirm with trial site)
- People diagnosed with a condition where the placenta has grown too deeply into the wall of the uterus
- People with a serious health condition that requires ongoing medication, beyond certain exceptions such as mild high blood pressure, an underactive thyroid, asthma, or mild mental health conditions (confirm with trial site for specific situations)
- People who have used alcohol, tobacco, or other substances during pregnancy
