Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You were admitted to the emergency room
  • You need a type of breathing support called high-flow nasal oxygen (a device that delivers warm, humidified air through nose tubes at a high rate)
  • You need at least 30% extra oxygen to keep your blood oxygen levels within the range your doctor has set
  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You (or a family member, if you are unable to) have signed and dated a consent form after the study has been fully explained to you
  • If a family member gave consent on your behalf, you will be asked to give your own consent as soon as you are able to

Who may not be able to join:

  • You need a different, more intensive type of breathing support right away (such as a face mask breathing device or a breathing tube)
  • Your blood pressure or circulation is very unstable and you need high doses of certain emergency medications to keep it stable
  • The device measuring your blood oxygen levels through your finger or ear is not giving a reliable reading
  • Your blood is too acidic (a serious chemical imbalance in the body) (confirm with trial site)
  • You are pregnant
  • Your doctors think there is a high chance you will need a breathing tube within the next 12 hours
  • You have a condition that affects how your blood carries oxygen, such as carbon monoxide poisoning, a certain type of inherited blood disorder (sickle cell disease), or abnormal hemoglobin levels
  • You have a permanent breathing opening in your throat (a tracheostomy)
  • A formal medical decision has already been made to limit or stop life-sustaining treatment for you
  • You are under legal guardianship
  • You are not free to make your own decisions (confirm with trial site)
  • You are already taking part in another clinical trial that requires consent
  • You have already been enrolled in this same trial during a previous episode of breathing difficulty

Additional reasons you may be removed from the trial after joining:

  • The device measuring your blood oxygen levels stops giving a reliable reading
  • You urgently need a breathing tube
  • You are discharged from the emergency room
