Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have moderate to severe depression, based on a standard questionnaire score (PHQ-9 score of 11 or higher)
  • You have never previously taken part in the "Friendship Bench" programme
  • You are able to speak English or Shona
  • You are willing and able to give written consent to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your depression is considered mild (PHQ-9 score below 11)
  • You are showing signs of psychosis (confirm with trial site)
  • You are considered at high risk of suicide based on a specific screening tool
  • You have received the Friendship Bench programme at any point in the last 12 months
  • You are currently receiving any treatment for depression, such as counselling, antidepressants, or care from a psychiatrist
  • You have end-stage AIDS, either now or in your medical history
  • You have kidney failure, either now or in your medical history
  • You have liver failure, either now or in your medical history
  • You have a serious heart or blood vessel condition, such as a previous heart attack, stroke, or irregular heartbeat, either now or in your medical history
  • You have or have had cancer
  • You have a positive pregnancy test
  • You are planning to become pregnant during the study period
  • You are not willing to use effective contraception during the study period
  • You are not able to understand the study in either English or Shona
