Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 21 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with a current Major Depressive Episode according to standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
- People whose depression has been rated as moderately severe or above on a standard clinical scale (a score of 20 or more on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale)
- People whose depression did not improve adequately after taking at least one antidepressant medication for a minimum of 4 weeks
- People who are able to give their informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a psychotic disorder diagnosed under standard clinical guidelines (DSM-5)
- People who have had problems with drug or alcohol misuse or dependence in the past 3 months
- People whose condition requires very rapid treatment, for example due to a high risk of suicide
- People with a significant neurological condition, such as epilepsy, that could increase risks from a treatment called TMS (a form of brain stimulation)
- People who have any metal in their skull, a skull defect, a pacemaker, a cochlear implant, a medication pump, or any other electronic implanted device
- People who are pregnant
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan for any reason
