Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) according to Chinese diagnostic criteria, and are between 40 and 75 years old
- Your Parkinson's disease is rated at a mild to moderate stage (Hoehn-Yahr stage 1–3) (confirm with trial site)
- You have had at least 2 of the following bowel problems for at least 6 months, occurring regularly in the past 3 months: straining during more than 1 in 4 toilet visits; hard or lumpy stools more than 1 in 4 times; feeling like your bowels didn't fully empty more than 1 in 4 times; feeling like something is blocking your back passage more than 1 in 4 times; needing to use your hand to help pass stools more than 1 in 4 times; or having fewer than 3 natural bowel movements per week
- You have been taking a stable, unchanged dose of your Parkinson's, antidepressant, or antipsychotic medications for at least 1 month
- You do not have any warning signs such as unexplained weight loss or blood in your stools, and other possible causes of your symptoms have been ruled out
- You are willing to take part and have signed a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a condition similar to Parkinson's disease but with additional features (known as Parkinsonism-plus syndrome)
- You have a history of stroke, brain injury, or epilepsy
- You have previously had surgery specifically to treat your Parkinson's disease
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- You have a psychiatric condition or would have difficulty cooperating with treatment and follow-up appointments
- You have a weakened immune system or are taking medication that affects your immune system
- You have had abdominal (stomach area) surgery in the past, unless it was an appendix removal, gallbladder removal, caesarean section, or hysterectomy
- You have diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, or another long-term condition that is not well controlled
- You have used probiotics or antibiotics within the month before joining the study
- You have serious heart, brain, kidney, or lung disease, or any form of cancer
