Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with persistent atrial fibrillation (an ongoing irregular heartbeat) and your doctor has recommended a procedure called catheter ablation to treat it.

Who may not be able to join:
- You have previously had a catheter ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation or any other heart rhythm problem.
- There is a medical reason why catheter ablation or general anaesthetic would not be safe for you, including a past allergic reaction to contrast dye used in scans, a blood clot inside your heart, or not having taken blood-thinning medication as required in the six weeks before the procedure.
- You have moderate or severe heart valve disease, or you have an artificial heart valve.
- You have moderate-to-severe heart failure, meaning your heart is pumping significantly less blood than it should, or you have significant heart failure symptoms affecting daily life.
- You have any form of disease affecting the heart muscle (confirm with trial site).
- You currently have an active infection or a fever.
- You have severe disease affecting the blood vessels in your brain.
- You are currently experiencing active bleeding in your digestive system.
- You have a condition affecting your blood's ability to clot, you are considered at high risk of bleeding, or you cannot safely receive a blood-thinning medication called heparin.
- Your kidney function blood test result is above a certain level, suggesting significantly reduced kidney function (confirm with trial site).
- You are currently on, or likely to need, kidney dialysis or a similar kidney support treatment.
- Your diabetes is not well controlled, based on recent blood sugar test results (confirm with trial site).
- You have a cancer that currently requires treatment.
- Your life expectancy is shorter than the length of the trial.
- You are pregnant, or you could become pregnant and are not using a reliable form of contraception.
- You are not able to give informed consent to take part in the trial.
