For the newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes group:
- Children aged 2 years or older but under 18 years old at the time of joining
- Children weighing at least 12 kg
- Children who have been recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, confirmed using recognised international criteria for children and adolescents
- Children who do not have any other inflammatory or autoimmune conditions alongside their diabetes

For the healthy comparison (control) group:

- Children who have taken steroid medications (by mouth or through a drip) in the month before the blood sample is taken
- Children for whom numbing cream used before blood sampling is not suitable for medical reasons
For the healthy comparison (control) group:
- Children who have a history of any autoimmune or inflammatory disease
- Children who have taken steroid medications (by mouth or through a drip) in the month before the blood sample is taken
- Children for whom numbing cream used before blood sampling is not suitable for medical reasons
