Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 75 years old, of any gender
- People whose cancer has been confirmed by laboratory testing to be a type called adenocarcinoma
- People whose tumour is located close to the opening of the bowel (within 7 cm)
- People who have already had a local surgical removal of their rectal cancer and whose results show either an early-stage tumour (pT1) with at least one concerning feature — such as cancer cells at or very near the edge of the removed tissue, deeper tissue involvement, poor cell appearance under a microscope, cancer spreading into nearby small vessels or nerves, or certain tumour growth patterns — or a slightly more advanced early tumour (pT2)
- People who have decided not to proceed with full radical surgery
- People whose cancer has not spread to the pelvis or other parts of the body
- People who are in a reasonable general state of health, as measured by a standard scoring system (confirm with trial site)
- People who are willing and able to follow the trial requirements consistently
- People whose tumour has a specific molecular characteristic known as MSS or pMMR (confirm with trial site)
- People who have not previously received any cancer treatment or immunotherapy
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People whose cancer has been confirmed as a specific type called signet ring cell carcinoma
- People who have had another cancer diagnosed within the past 5 years
- People with serious health conditions, such as severe mental health disorders, significant heart disease, or an infection that is not under control
- People with a disease affecting the immune system, or who have been taking immune-suppressing medications long-term
- People whose blood test results fall below certain required levels for blood cells and organ function (confirm specific values with trial site)
- People with a condition called DPD deficiency, which affects how certain medicines are processed by the body
- People who are known to be allergic to any component of the trial treatment
