Who might be able to join this trial:

If you have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease:

  • You are a man or woman aged 30 or older at the time of your Parkinson's diagnosis
  • You have at least two of these symptoms: shaking at rest, slowness of movement, or muscle stiffness — and at least one of those must be shaking or slowness; OR you have shaking or slowness on just one side of your body
  • You were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 2 years ago or less
  • Your Parkinson's symptoms are mild to moderate (early stage, confirmed by a staging scale called Hoehn & Yahr, stage I or II)
  • A special brain scan (called an AV133 PET scan) shows reduced activity of a protein called VMAT2 in your brain
  • You have not yet started any Parkinson's medications
  • You are able to give your consent to take part

If you are in the very early ("prodromal") stage before a formal Parkinson's diagnosis:

  • You meet certain recognised early warning criteria for Parkinson's disease (confirm with trial site)
  • You have been tested and confirmed to have a reduced sense of smell
  • You have additional risk factors, such as a close biological relative with Parkinson's, a sleep condition called RBD, or a known gene variant linked to Parkinson's risk (such as LRRK2 or GBA)
  • You are aged 60 or older — or aged 30 or older if you carry specific rare gene variants such as SNCA, Parkin, or Pink1
  • A special brain scan (AV133 PET) shows reduced activity of the VMAT2 protein
  • If you take certain medications (α-methyldopa, methylphenidate, amphetamine-based medicines, or modafinil), you are willing and able to stop taking them for a set period before your brain scan (confirm with trial site)
  • You have not yet started any Parkinson's medications
  • You are able to give your consent to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently taking any Parkinson's medications, such as levodopa, dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors, or amantadine
  • You have been diagnosed with dementia or a significant memory or thinking problem
  • You have taken certain medicines within the past month that could interfere with the brain scan, including some antipsychotics, metoclopramide, reserpine, or stimulant-type medications (confirm full list with trial site)
  • You have a significant heart condition, or an abnormal heart rhythm test result (ECG), including a specific reading called QTc above 450 ms
  • You are currently taking any medicines known to affect heart rhythm (confirm with trial site)
  • You have taken part in another clinical trial involving an experimental drug or device within the past 60 days
