Who might be able to join this trial:

  • U.S. military veterans between 18 and 65 years old
  • People who test negative for pregnancy on the days of MRI scans
  • People who score 10 or higher on a scale that measures repetitive negative thoughts about suicide (called the Suicide Rumination Scale)
  • People whose psychiatric medications have been stable and are considered clinically settled
  • People who are currently receiving mental health care
  • People who are able to give written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with serious medical or neurological conditions that could interfere with the treatment
  • People who have had a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury
  • People who are currently considered to be at imminent risk of suicide, as determined by a psychiatric interview and clinical assessment
  • People who currently have a psychotic disorder
  • People who have medical reasons why they cannot safely have an MRI scan (for example, certain metal implants)
  • People who have a substance use disorder involving substances other than cannabis or alcohol — or who have a moderate or severe problem with alcohol or cannabis use (mild alcohol or cannabis use issues do not disqualify someone from joining)
  • People who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
