Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You receive your regular healthcare at a Penn Medicine primary care clinic
  • You have been diagnosed with major depression by a doctor
  • You scored 10 or higher on a standard depression questionnaire called the PHQ-9
  • You are between 21 and 64 years old when you enter the study
  • A primary care doctor has prescribed you an antidepressant medication
  • You are willing and interested in taking antidepressant medication

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have taken antidepressant medication at any point in the past 90 days
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have an active problem with substance use or addiction (not including nicotine/tobacco)
  • You have ever been treated for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia at any point in your life
  • You have been admitted to a hospital or visited an emergency department due to suicidal thoughts or behaviour in the past year
  • You are not able to give your own informed consent to participate in the study
  • You have already been taking an antidepressant for more than 10 days at the time of your first study assessment
