Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (without psychosis) confirmed by a psychiatric interview and a study psychiatrist
• Your first episode of depression started before you were 50 years old
• You are currently experiencing moderate to severe depression, based on a standard rating scale score
• At least one antidepressant medication has not worked for you during your current episode of depression, even when taken at the right dose for long enough
• You are either not taking any psychiatric medications, or you have been on the same stable dose for at least 6 weeks and are willing to keep that dose unchanged throughout the study
• You are able to understand and agree to take part in the study on your own
• You are able to safely have an MRI scan

Who may not be able to join:

• You are currently in immediate danger of attempting suicide, based on a standard questionnaire score
• Your current episode of depression has lasted more than 5 years
• You have another significant mental health diagnosis alongside depression, such as PTSD or OCD
• You show signs of memory or thinking difficulties, based on a standard cognitive test score
• You have had a significant problem with substance use (such as alcohol or drugs) in the past 6 months
• You have recently started a new talking therapy or other treatment (such as light therapy) within the past 6 weeks before screening
• You have previously received any form of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatment
• You have taken part in another clinical trial involving an experimental drug or device in the past 6 weeks
• Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been tried and did not work for you
• You have had brain surgery to treat a neurological or psychiatric condition (such as deep brain stimulation or similar procedures)
• You have an unstable or poorly controlled physical health condition
• You have a significant neurological condition, such as a history of moderate to severe head injury, stroke, or Parkinson's disease
• You have epilepsy
• You have a history of seizures (with some exceptions at the doctor's discretion), or you take medications or have a condition that could increase your risk of having a seizure
• You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study
• You have a cardiac pacemaker, cochlear implant, or any other implanted electronic device
• You have a vision problem that would stop you from reading words shown on a screen inside the MRI scanner without wearing glasses
