Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with agoraphobia (a fear of situations where escape might be difficult), with or without panic disorder.
- People who have been diagnosed with social phobia (a strong fear of social situations) — for the clinical comparison group.
- People who do not have any current or long-term mental health conditions — for the healthy comparison group.
- People in the agoraphobia or social phobia groups who also have a depressive disorder as an additional diagnosis may still be considered.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been diagnosed with substance dependence, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia, an eating disorder, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), a current major depressive episode, or a personality disorder.
- People who have certain physical health conditions, including cancer, heart or cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, or metabolic or hormonal (endocrine) disorders.
- People who are currently taking psychiatric medications (except antidepressants), medications that affect the heart or blood pressure (such as beta-blockers), medications containing cortisone, or skincare creams that contain corticosteroids.
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who are currently receiving psychotherapy (talking therapy).
