Who might be able to join this trial:
For young people with Social Anxiety Disorder (patient group):
- People aged 16 to 22 who have been diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder (a condition involving intense fear of social situations), confirmed through a standardised clinical interview
- People whose primary language is English or Spanish
For healthy young people (comparison group):
- People aged 16 to 22 without a history of anxiety or other psychiatric conditions
- People whose primary language is English or Spanish
For parents/caregivers:
- Parents or caregivers of any age who speak English or Spanish fluently, with no other restrictions on eligibility
Who may not be able to join:
For young people with Social Anxiety Disorder (patient group):
- People who are currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide, including plans or intentions, as measured by a standard safety scale
- People who have metal implants (such as a pacemaker), metal braces, retainers, tattoos or permanent make-up containing metal, or medical skin patches that cannot be removed (these are safety concerns for MRI scanning)
- People currently taking any psychiatric or psychoactive medications
- People who have ever been diagnosed with OCD, a psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or intellectual disability
- People who have any serious neurological or medical conditions (such as lupus, cancer, or HIV), as reported by the participant
- People who currently have a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- People who currently have a severe substance use problem (not including tobacco or nicotine)
- People who are pregnant at the time of the MRI scan, based on self-report
For healthy young people (comparison group):
- People who have ever been diagnosed with any anxiety disorder, OCD, a psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or intellectual disability
- People who have had any psychiatric disorder in the past two years
- People who currently have depression
- People who have any serious neurological or medical conditions
- People currently taking any psychiatric or psychoactive medications
- People who have metal implants, metal braces, retainers, tattoos or permanent make-up containing metal, or medical skin patches that cannot be removed
- People who are currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide, including plans or intentions
- People who are pregnant at the time of the MRI scan, based on self-report
For parents/caregivers:
- People whose primary language is not English or Spanish
