Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, or osteoporosis.
  • People with Parkinson's disease who are able to report a history of daily walking difficulties such as freezing (sudden stopping) or festination (short, shuffling steps), or people with other listed conditions whose walking or ability to move between positions is affected by their condition.

  • People with normal vision, or vision that is corrected to a satisfactory level with glasses or lenses, or who are assessed as safe to move around with support (confirm with trial site for exact vision standard).
  • People with a Montreal Cognitive Assessment score above 21, or who are able to follow a simple two-step instruction.
  • Healthy participants (involved in Phases 1, 2, and 3) with no long-term conditions that affect movement.
  • Healthy participants who are able to walk, with or without a walking aid, for at least 3 minutes, and who have completed the Canadian PAR-Q readiness check; if over 69 years old, people who are already accustomed to this level of physical activity.
  • Healthy participants aged 18 years or older.
  • Healthy participants with normal vision or corrected-to-normal vision, or who are assessed as safe to move around with support (confirm with trial site for exact vision standard).
  • Healthy participants with a Montreal Cognitive Assessment score above 21, or who are able to follow a simple two-step instruction.

Who may not be able to join

  • People with any physical or mental health condition that would affect their ability to safely take part in this level of activity, or their ability to understand and safely follow instructions during testing, as assessed by the research team through the PAR-Q check.
  • People with cognitive (thinking or memory) difficulties that would affect their ability to safely participate and follow instructions.
  • People with any injury or condition — other than Parkinson's disease or their primary referred condition — that may affect their balance.
  • People with any skin conditions or broken skin on the calf or behind the knee.
  • People who have deep brain stimulation devices, pacemakers, or other implants that may interfere with the measurement equipment used in the trial.
