Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are willing to sign a consent form before any study-related activities begin
  • You are between the ages of 16 and 30, regardless of gender
  • You have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) based on standard medical guidelines (DSM-5)
  • Your current depressive episode has lasted 2 years or more, OR you have had at least 4 separate depressive episodes with the most recent one lasting at least 1 year
  • You have tried at least 3 adequate courses of antidepressant medication from 2 or more different types, and they have not worked; and you have either refused, been unable to tolerate, or not responded to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT — a treatment using electrical stimulation)
  • Your depression is rated as moderate to severe based on standard depression scoring scales (HAMD-17 score of 20 or above, or MADRS score of 25 or above)
  • You are able to communicate effectively, and you (and your legal guardian, if applicable) are able to sign a written consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, or another psychotic disorder
  • You have a severe personality disorder
  • You have a serious physical illness or a brain disease caused by a physical condition
  • You have been diagnosed with alcohol or drug abuse or dependence within the past year
  • You have medical conditions that make surgery unsafe, or you are unable to stop taking blood-thinning medications
  • A brain MRI scan done within the past year showed abnormal findings
  • You are unable to have an MRI scan for any reason (not related to a DBS device) (confirm with trial site)
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are already taking part in another unrelated clinical study
  • Any other factor — such as your home situation, health, mental wellbeing, or where you live — that could put you at risk or prevent you from completing the study (confirm with trial site)
