Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 18 and 40 years old
  • People with good vision and hearing
  • People who are willing and able to give their informed consent to participate
  • People with a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 35 (a measure of body weight relative to height, used here to exclude those who are underweight)
  • People who are sufficiently fluent in English to understand and complete the study tasks

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently receiving or seeking treatment for any mental health condition

  • People with ADHD that requires treatment with stimulant or other brain-affecting medications
  • People who test positive for a range of substances including amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opioids, benzodiazepines, ketamine, MDMA, fentanyl, synthetic marijuana, and several others (confirm with trial site for the full list)
  • People who regularly drink 14 or more units of alcohol per week
  • People who have had eye, throat, or ear surgery, or a medical procedure involving a needle or line into a vein, in the past 6 months
  • People who have had a head injury causing concussion or loss of consciousness in the past 6 months
  • People who have ever had a collapsed lung or lung surgery
  • People with a history of irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmias)
  • People with current injuries to the face or mouth, including mouth ulcers or dental problems
  • People who have had dental surgery in the past month
  • People who have been deep-sea or scuba diving in the past month (due to the risk of decompression sickness)
  • People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study
  • People who are breastfeeding during the study
  • People with asthma, emphysema, or any other condition affecting the lungs or breathing
  • People with a diagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency
  • People who have used any recreational drugs in the last 3 months
  • People who have taken part in any other drug study in the last 3 months
  • People who have taken part in another study using the same tasks in the last year

For the optional sleep study add-on, people may also not be able to join if they:

  • Are unable to undergo heart monitoring
  • Are unable to wear a sleep-monitoring patch device for the full monitoring period
  • Have an implanted neurostimulator (a device implanted in the body to deliver electrical signals to nerves)
