Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with left-sided ulcerative colitis (disease covering more than 15 cm but not past a certain point in the colon called the splenic flexure), extensive ulcerative colitis (disease extending past the splenic flexure), IBD-unclassified, or Crohn's disease affecting at least two segments of the colon (segments include the right colon, transverse colon, left colon, and rectum).
  • People whose IBD symptoms started at least 8 years ago, OR whose IBD was diagnosed at least 8 years ago, OR whose IBD was diagnosed at any point if certain additional risk factors for colon cancer are present — these risk factors include a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a personal history of dysplasia (abnormal cells), certain types of polyps (sessile serrated adenomas or right-sided hyperplastic polyps larger than 10mm), or a family history of colon cancer in a close relative (confirm with trial site for exact family history requirements).
  • People who are already scheduled to have a colonoscopy as part of their regular medical care.
  • People whose upcoming colonoscopy is being done at least partly to check for abnormal or pre-cancerous cells (dysplasia surveillance).

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People whose doctor performing the colonoscopy (endoscopist) feels that taking random tissue samples (biopsies) during the procedure would not be safe or appropriate for them.
  • People who have a history of visible abnormal cells (dysplasia, whether high or low grade) that were not completely removed.
  • People who have a history of a type of polyp called a sessile serrated adenoma that was not completely removed.
  • People who have a history of bowel (colorectal) cancer.
  • People whose endoscopist feels it is essential that a specific type of colonoscopy technique (pancolonic contrast or virtual chromoendoscopy) must be used during their procedure.
  • People whose IBD has never involved at least two segments of the colon.
  • People who have had a colonoscopy in the last 11 months, unless that colonoscopy was considered by the endoscopist to be inadequate for checking for abnormal cells AND did not find any dysplasia or sessile serrated adenomas (note: a sigmoidoscopy, which looks at only part of the bowel, does not count as a colonoscopy for this purpose).
  • People who are unable to give their informed consent to take part in the trial.
