Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between the ages of 17 and 60 years old
- People of any gender
- People who score 8 or higher on a standard GERD symptom questionnaire (called the GERD-Q), which is used to confirm a diagnosis of acid reflux disease
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of digestive tract diseases, previous stomach or small intestine surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, or a condition called Barrett's esophagus (a change in the lining of the food pipe)
- People who have had or currently have a condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, or other conditions that cause the stomach to produce too much acid, including stomach or duodenal ulcers
- People who have had all or part of their stomach surgically removed, or who have a condition called esophageal achalasia (where the food pipe has trouble moving food into the stomach)
- People who have had COVID-19
- People with serious heart, lung, hormonal, metabolic, or mental health conditions
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose liver test results are above certain levels — specifically, total bilirubin at or above 1.2 mg/dl or ALT above 100 IU/l (confirm with trial site)
- People with significant kidney problems, where kidney function falls below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- People currently taking the medications atazanavir sulphate, nelfinavir, or rilpivirine hydrochloride, due to the risk of these drugs interacting with the trial treatment
