Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are older than 60 years of age
• People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (a serious form of depression), whether it is their first episode or a recurring one
• People whose depression symptoms are at a moderate level or above, based on a standard rating scale called the MADRS (confirm with trial site)
• People who are currently looking to start treatment for their depression with antidepressant medication
• People who score above 24 on a standard memory and thinking test called the MoCA, meaning their general thinking abilities are largely intact
• People who are fluent in English or Spanish

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have another major psychiatric diagnosis, except for simple phobias or anxiety-related conditions (such as generalised anxiety or panic disorder) that only appeared during the current depressive episode
• People who have had a problem with alcohol or drug dependence or misuse in the past year
• People who have a history of a developmental disorder, or who have a history of an IQ below 70
• People who have had active thoughts of suicide in the past month, as assessed using a specific safety scale called the C-SSRS
• People who are in the very early stages of grief, within the past month
• People who currently have, or have previously had, psychosis (such as hallucinations or delusions)
• People who have a primary neurological condition, including dementia, stroke, brain tumours, epilepsy, or similar conditions
• People who have an unstable or serious physical health condition that needs urgent medical treatment
• People who have any reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
• People who have had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), sometimes called shock therapy, within the past 6 months
