Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 45 years old (any gender)
  • You have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder based on standard psychiatric guidelines (DSM-5)
  • You are being seen as an outpatient or inpatient, and your depression has been rated as at least moderate severity on standard clinical rating scales
  • A screening questionnaire has ruled out bipolar disorder for you
  • You have either been taking antidepressant medication consistently for at least 4 weeks, or you are not currently taking any antidepressants
  • You are willing and able to give written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have been diagnosed with another mental health condition, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, alcohol or substance dependence, or an eating disorder
  • You have an intellectual disability or another reason that makes it difficult to cooperate with the study, or your ability to make legal decisions for yourself is limited
  • You have a neurological or brain condition (such as stroke, brain tumour, Parkinson's disease, or epilepsy) or a history of serious brain injury
  • You have a condition that makes exercise risky, such as high blood pressure or heart disease
  • You are currently receiving a structured, ongoing course of talking therapy (psychological therapy)
  • Your heart rate during a standard 3-minute step fitness test recovers too slowly (above 131 beats per minute for men, or above 140 beats per minute for women)
  • You have a physical condition that prevents you from taking part in exercise
  • You score 2 or higher on a standard physical activity readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q), which checks whether it is safe for you to exercise (confirm with trial site)
  • You are pregnant, or you have a reason why you cannot have an MRI scan
  • You are experiencing severe thoughts of suicide or are considered a risk of harming others
