Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have recently given birth
- People who are 20 years of age or older and able to give informed consent
- People who were diagnosed with high blood pressure during pregnancy (gestational hypertension) or a serious pregnancy complication involving high blood pressure and organ involvement (preeclampsia), either before or during their delivery hospital stay, as diagnosed by their clinical team using standard medical guidelines
- People who speak English
Who may not be able to join:
- People who were prescribed a type of cholesterol-lowering medication called a statin before or during their pregnancy
- People with a hereditary cholesterol condition or a pre-existing high cholesterol condition, specifically those with LDL ("bad") cholesterol above 190 before pregnancy, or those already prescribed a statin for high cholesterol before delivery
- People who plan to breastfeed for 6 months or longer
- People who plan to try to become pregnant within the next 6 months
- People who are currently incarcerated
- People whose high blood pressure during pregnancy is thought to have been caused by a condition related to the baby rather than the mother
- People who have a medical reason they cannot take statin medications, or who are known to have an allergy or sensitivity to atorvastatin (a specific statin) or any of its ingredients
- People with active liver disease, including acute or chronic hepatitis, or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels at twice the upper normal limit or higher
- People with a history of a serious muscle breakdown condition (rhabdomyolysis) or muscle disease (myopathy)
- People who are HIV positive, due to possible interactions between atorvastatin and HIV medications
- People who have had a solid organ transplant (such as a kidney or liver transplant), due to possible interactions between atorvastatin and anti-rejection medications
- People with active cancer
- People currently taking certain medications that may interact with atorvastatin, including cyclosporine, clarithromycin, itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors, rifampin, or digoxin
