Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer, confirmed by a laboratory tissue test (pathology)
- People who are 18 years of age or older

- People who need emergency surgery, or who are having open (non-keyhole) surgery

- People who have a complete blockage of the bowel
- People who have a long-term history of taking immune-suppressing medications or steroid medications (such as corticosteroids)
- People with serious heart conditions, including heart failure, significantly reduced heart function, or those who have had a heart attack or heart bypass surgery within the past 6 months
- People with severe kidney disease who require dialysis or have very low kidney function
- People who need additional organs removed during the same operation
- People who have cirrhosis (serious scarring) of the liver
- People where the surgical join (anastomosis) is found during the operation to be incomplete or to not hold properly when tested
- People having a specific two-stage bowel pull-through procedure (known as the Modified Bacon or Turnbull-Cutait procedure)
- People where the surgeon decides during the operation that a temporary bowel diversion (ileostomy) is necessary due to an unexpected complication
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial
