Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults who have been referred to Central Intake for a psychiatric consultation by their family doctor or primary care provider, where the main mental health concern is an anxiety disorder (such as social anxiety, generalized anxiety, or panic disorder) or depression (such as major depressive disorder or persistent depressive disorder)
- People who are able to participate in group sessions held in English, with up to 10 participants
- People who are able to attend a virtual group session every two weeks, with each session lasting about 1.5 hours
- People who have access to a private location and a camera to join the virtual group sessions
- People who currently live in the community in Manitoba and plan to remain there for at least 6 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (Type 1 or Type 2), even if they are currently experiencing a depressive episode
- People whose primary diagnosis is a personality disorder that is causing their anxiety or depression symptoms (having personality disorder traits alone is not an exclusion)
- People who already have an ongoing, established care relationship with a psychiatrist
- People who have received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) — a brain stimulation treatment — within the past 6 months
- People with a moderate-to-severe substance use disorder, particularly where substances are used throughout the day or where attending the group without using substances beforehand would not be possible
- People who are currently experiencing psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations or delusions)
- People with a moderate-to-severe intellectual disability or significant cognitive impairment
- People who are currently experiencing significant eating disorder symptoms — for example, those causing notable weight loss, malnutrition, or taking up a large part of daily life mentally or physically
- People who have engaged in self-harm requiring medical or psychiatric attention, or who have had active suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts within the past 6 months
- People whose participation may raise safety concerns for other group members or facilitators
