Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are over 18 years old.
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (either the "comes and goes" type or the ongoing type) within the last 2 years.
- People whose doctor has recommended a specific heart procedure that uses a balloon and freezing technology to treat the irregular heart rhythm.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose left heart chamber (left atrium) is significantly enlarged beyond certain size measurements.
- People who have previously had a catheter-based or surgical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation.
- People who are considered severely frail (scoring 7 or higher on a standard frailty scale) or who have a life expectancy of less than 1 year.
- People who are unable to understand the study or cannot give their agreement to take part.
- People whose procedure would require additional freezing treatments in the heart beyond the standard areas (pulmonary veins).
- People whose procedure would require an additional catheter (a thin flexible tube) beyond the standard cryoablation device to complete the treatment.
- People who cannot safely take blood-thinning medication, or who have a known intolerance to a specific blood thinner called heparin.
- People who have a blood clot present inside their heart.
- People whose atrial fibrillation is caused by a temporary or reversible condition.
- People who have serious disease affecting the mitral or aortic heart valves.
- People who have a heart condition they were born with.
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant within the next 12 months.
