Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 or older who are able to give informed consent to participate
  • People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (a type of serious depression) without psychotic symptoms, based on standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
  • People who are currently going through a major depressive episode
  • People whose depression symptom score on a standard rating scale (called the MADRS) is above 20 at the screening stage
  • People whose depression has not responded well enough to at least 2 different antidepressant medications at the right dose and for a long enough time during their current episode — this is sometimes called treatment-resistant depression
  • People who are already enrolled in one of three specific treatments (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, intravenous ketamine, or electroconvulsive therapy) through the Interventional Psychiatry Program at St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health Toronto
  • People who own a smartphone (for those using wearable devices as part of the study)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who do not have access to the internet, as this is needed to use the study platforms
  • People who have had any medication changes in the 28 days before their screening appointment, or during the treatment period — other than treatments received through the Interventional Psychiatry Program
  • People who do not speak English fluently enough to communicate study information, answer questions accurately, or go through the informed consent process
