Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 to 80
  • People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of rectal cancer (lieberkuhnian adenocarcinoma) confirmed by tissue testing, with a tumour type known as MSS status
  • People who have received, or are due to receive, a course of pre-surgery treatment involving chemotherapy (4 to 6 rounds of (m)FOLFIRINOX or FOLFOX) with or without a specific type of radiotherapy called CAP 50, or CAP 50 radiotherapy alone
  • People whose tumour, before any pre-surgery treatment, was classified at a certain stage (T2 or T3) on an MRI scan
  • People with no more than 3 affected lymph nodes, or lymph nodes no larger than 8mm, as seen on MRI before pre-surgery treatment
  • People whose tumour measured 4 cm or less on MRI before pre-surgery treatment
  • People with no signs of cancer having spread to other parts of the body, confirmed by a body scan or PET scan
  • People whose tumour was located no more than 8 cm from the anal opening, as measured on MRI or by clinical examination
  • People whose tumour had not grown into the anal canal or the muscles that control bowel continence, as seen on MRI
  • People who are well enough to have surgery
  • People who are able to attend repeated check-up appointments and close monitoring if assigned to the experimental group
  • People enrolled in, or covered by, a social security scheme
  • People who have given their free and fully informed written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have previously had chemotherapy or radiation to the pelvic area (not counting the pre-surgery treatment described above)
  • People who are unable to have a pelvic MRI scan
  • People whose cancer has a different tumour type (MSI status) and who are receiving immunotherapy
  • People who have, or have had within the past 5 years, another cancer — except for certain skin cancers or non-invasive cancers that are considered fully treated
  • People who are pregnant, likely to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
  • People under legal guardianship or protection orders, or who are deprived of their liberty
  • People who are unable to attend regular medical follow-up due to geographic, social, or psychological reasons
