Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People scheduled for a major planned (non-emergency) surgery, such as heart, chest, or abdominal surgery
- People expected to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than one day after their surgery
- Healthy people of a similar age who do not have ICU-acquired muscle weakness, recruited from staff at the relevant hospital department (to serve as a comparison group)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have not given their informed consent to participate
- People requiring emergency surgery
- People who have previously taken part in this same study
- People with a pre-existing disease affecting the muscles or nerves
- People with a pre-existing brain or nervous system condition that has caused lasting muscle or movement problems (for example, a previous stroke, brain bleed, or brain tumour)
- People who are receiving or have received very high doses of steroid medication (such as more than 300 mg of hydrocortisone or an equivalent dose of a similar drug, per day) before or during the study
