Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People attending a hospital endoscopy centre for a routine colonoscopy screening, either as an outpatient or as someone already admitted to hospital
  • People aged 18 years or older

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a condition where the stomach empties too slowly (gastroparesis) or where food cannot pass out of the stomach normally (gastric outlet obstruction)
  • People who are known or suspected to have a blocked or perforated bowel
  • People with severe long-term kidney failure (where the kidneys are filtering less than 30 mL of blood per minute)
  • People with severe heart failure, classified as Stage III or IV by the New York Heart Association scale
  • People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with serious inflammation of the colon or a dangerously enlarged colon
  • People with poorly controlled high blood pressure (top number above 180 mmHg and/or bottom number above 100 mmHg)
  • People with moderate to heavy active bleeding in the digestive tract (more than 100 mL per day)
  • People with significant psychiatric or psychological illness
  • People who have a known allergy to the medications used to clean out the bowel before a colonoscopy
  • People who have previously had surgery on the colon or rectum
