Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 75 years who are alert and able to understand and sign a consent form.
- People who have long-term esophageal (food pipe) symptoms linked to how the brain and gut communicate with each other, such as heartburn, acid reflux, the feeling of something stuck in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or chest pain or discomfort.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a narrowing of the food pipe, or who have had surgery on the food pipe, digestive tract, or throat in the past.
- People who have structural problems with the food pipe (such as pouches or rings in the food pipe), or who have certain types of food pipe inflammation (infectious, erosive, or eosinophilic esophagitis).
- People who have been diagnosed with non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease or significant problems with how the food pipe moves food.
- People who have a current or past diagnosis of cancer in the food pipe, digestive tract, or any other organ.
- People who have significant hormonal (endocrine) or immune/rheumatic conditions that may affect how the digestive tract moves.
- People who have been continuously taking medications that may affect food pipe movement within the past month — for example, certain medicines such as anticholinergics, opioid-type medicines, nitrates, or calcium channel blockers (confirm with trial site).
- People who have taken antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (a type of antidepressant), or other psychiatric medications within the past three months.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have a mental illness or who are unable to participate cooperatively in the trial.
- People who have a known allergy to tricyclic antidepressants (a type of medication).
- People who have a known allergy to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (a type of medication).
- People who have a known allergy to any ingredient in proton pump inhibitors (a type of medication commonly used for stomach acid).
