Who might be able to join this trial:

All participants must meet these general requirements:

  • You are able to read and communicate in English
  • You have someone in your life (such as a family member or close friend) who sees or speaks with you regularly and can act as a study partner

If joining the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) group:

  • You are aged 60 or older
  • You have been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (minor problems with memory or thinking)

If joining the remitted depression (rMDD) group:

  • You are aged 65 or older
  • You have had one or more episodes of major depression as an adult, which either ended between 2 months and 5 years ago, or ended more than 5 years ago but was treated by a doctor, psychiatrist, or hospital at some point

If joining the Control group:

  • You are aged 60 or older

Who may not be able to join:

General exclusions applying to everyone:

  • You have ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or OCD
  • You have been diagnosed with alcohol or drug use disorder within the past 12 months
  • You are currently considered at high risk for suicide
  • You have a significant neurological condition, such as a history of stroke, epilepsy/seizures, or multiple sclerosis
  • You have an unstable or poorly controlled medical condition, such as uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure
  • You are taking anti-seizure medications or certain psychiatric medications that could affect memory/thinking tests, and these cannot be safely stopped (confirm with trial site)
  • You are currently experiencing depressive symptoms above a certain level, as measured by a standard clinical scale (confirm with trial site)

Additional exclusions for the MCI group:

  • You have taken a medication intended to improve memory or thinking (a "cognitive enhancer") in the past 6 weeks

Additional exclusions for the rMDD group:

  • You have taken a cognitive enhancer in the past 6 weeks
  • You have received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), sometimes called "shock therapy," within the past 6 months

Additional exclusions for the Control group:

  • You have ever been diagnosed with major depression at any point in your life
  • You have been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (minor problems with memory or thinking)
