Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with recurring moderate or severe major depression, or long-lasting (persistent) depression.
  • People whose current episode of depression has not improved enough with oral antidepressant tablets.
  • People who have been taking oral antidepressant tablets for at least 8 weeks and are willing to keep taking the same medication at the same dose throughout the study.
  • People who score 22 or higher on a standard depression rating scale (called the HAM-D17) at two early points in the study process.
  • People who, in the opinion of the trial team, are willing and able to follow all study procedures and requirements.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have been diagnosed with, or treated for, another mental health condition as their main focus of care within the past year (other than depression).
  • People whom the trial team considers to be at immediate risk of harming themselves or others.
  • People whose depression did not respond to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during the current episode of depression.
