Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 60 years or older
- People with high blood pressure — either newly diagnosed (confirmed by two separate measurements on different days showing systolic pressure above 140 mmHg or diastolic pressure above 90 mmHg), or previously diagnosed (confirmed by one measurement at the screening visit)
- People who have had at least one past heart or blood vessel event, such as a heart attack, stroke, stable angina, diagnosed coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, or a mini-stroke (TIA) — note: heart attacks or strokes that happened within the last 3 months do not count
- OR, instead of a past heart or blood vessel event, people who have at least one cardiovascular risk factor, such as: currently smoking more than one cigarette per day for at least one year; high LDL cholesterol (above 4.0 mmol/L); being aged 75 or older; a high cardiovascular risk score (ESC HeartScore above 15%); or a BMI above 32 kg/m²
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose high blood pressure is caused by another known medical condition
- People who have had a heart attack or stroke within the past 3 months
- People with heart failure with symptoms
- People with a history of diabetes
- People with a history of ketoacidosis (a serious chemical imbalance in the body)
- People with significant liver problems (based on specific blood test results)
- People with significantly reduced kidney function (based on a specific kidney function score at the first visit)
- People who have taken an SGLT2 inhibitor medication within 8 weeks before joining the trial, or who have not tolerated this type of medication in the past
- People who are currently participating in another clinical trial involving an investigational treatment within the last month
- People with a known allergy or sensitivity to SGLT2 inhibitor medications
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the trial
- People with a serious medical condition (unrelated to kidney or heart/blood vessel disease) that a doctor estimates gives them a life expectancy of less than 2 years
- People with an active cancer currently requiring treatment (with the exception of certain successfully treated skin cancers)
- People who are unable to give informed consent to participate
