Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 80 years old.
- People who have been diagnosed with cataracts.
- People who are scheduled for cataract surgery at National Taiwan University Hospital, using a specific surgical method involving ultrasound to remove the lens and replacing it with an artificial lens, performed under eye-drop (surface) anaesthesia.
- People who have no known bad reactions to an oral anti-anxiety medication called XANAX (alprazolam).
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have any medical reasons that would make surgery unsafe for them.
- People who have any medical reasons that would make taking the study medication unsafe for them.
- People who are unable to clearly complete the relevant questionnaires, or who report no anxiety before surgery, or who score below a certain threshold on a standard anxiety assessment (called the STAI-S or STAI-T) (confirm with trial site).
- People who regularly take anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills, or pain relief medications before the procedure.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of the procedure.
- People who have serious corneal disease, a very advanced cataract, very small pupils, or a displaced lens that makes standard surgery more difficult.
- People who are unable to fully cooperate during surgery performed under eye-drop anaesthesia.
- People who are pregnant or possibly pregnant — women under 55 years old will be asked about this by the research team.
