Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with Parkinson's disease:

  • You are a man or woman between 50 and 75 years old.
  • You have been clinically diagnosed with Parkinson's disease based on recognised diagnostic guidelines.
  • You have at least two of these symptoms: resting tremor, slow movement, or muscle stiffness (at least one must be resting tremor or slow movement); or you have tremor or slow movement that affects one side of your body more than the other.
  • You are able to give your own informed consent to participate.

For healthy volunteers:

  • You are a healthy individual whose age (within 2 years) and sex matches a Parkinson's disease participant in the trial.
  • You are able to give your own informed consent to participate.

Who may not be able to join:

For people with Parkinson's disease:

  • Your Parkinson's-like symptoms are caused by medications, metabolic conditions, brain infections, or other degenerative brain diseases rather than Parkinson's disease itself.
  • You have been diagnosed with dementia by a doctor.
  • A previous MRI brain scan showed a significant neurological (brain or nerve) condition (confirm with trial site).
  • You have a serious illness such as heart failure or cancer.
  • You smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day, or you have a history of alcohol or drug addiction.
  • You have an inflammatory bowel or gut disease.
  • You have a long-term condition that may affect gut bacteria, such as diabetes, liver cirrhosis, or cardiovascular disease.
  • You have a blood disorder, an autoimmune disease, or you have taken immune-suppressing medication in the past 3 months.
  • You have taken antibiotics within the 3 months before providing a sample.
  • You suffer from chronic constipation.

For healthy volunteers:

  • A close biological relative (parent, brother, sister, or child) has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
  • You have, or have previously had, a significant neurological condition (confirm with trial site).
  • A previous MRI brain scan showed a significant neurological condition (confirm with trial site).
  • You have taken certain medications — including antipsychotics, metoclopramide, or reserpine — in the 6 months before screening.
  • You have an inflammatory bowel or gut disease.
  • You smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day, or you have a history of alcohol or drug addiction.
  • You have a long-term condition that may affect gut bacteria, such as diabetes, liver cirrhosis, or cardiovascular disease.
  • You have a blood disorder, an autoimmune disease, or you have taken immune-suppressing medication in the past 3 months.
  • You have taken antibiotics within the 3 months before providing a sample.
  • You suffer from chronic constipation.
  • You are currently taking part in another clinical trial.
