Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who are not pregnant and are currently admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC)
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
- People who have high blood sugar that requires insulin treatment (either injections under the skin or a personal insulin pump) during their hospital stay and at the time they leave the hospital
- People whose blood sugar readings in the 24 hours before joining the trial were between 70 and 350 mg/dL
- People who need their blood sugar checked at least once per day
- People whose mental alertness and hand coordination are sufficient to use a Libre 3 Plus or Dexcom G7 sensor and its matching app on their own smartphone
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently using, or have used in the past 3 months, a Libre 3 Plus or Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor
- People whose smartphone is not compatible with the Libre 3 or Dexcom G7 app
- People who received chemotherapy during their current hospital stay
- People who are planning to have major surgery within 10 to 15 days
- People who are on kidney dialysis (either haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis)
- People who require medications to maintain blood pressure, a breathing machine, sedation, or admission to an intensive care unit
- People taking more than 500 milligrams of Vitamin C per day
- People taking a medication called hydroxyurea
- People taking more than 4 grams of acetaminophen (paracetamol) per day, or more than 1 gram every 6 hours
- People with significant fluid-related swelling, such as that caused by liver cirrhosis with fluid in the abdomen, heart failure with swelling, or kidney conditions causing poor circulation
- People whose hospital admission is related to a serious diabetic emergency involving very high blood sugar (diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperosmotic nonketotic state)
- People with a skin allergy to adhesives
