Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are veterans of the military
- People who are between 18 and 70 years of age
- People who have a primary diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (a form of depression), confirmed by a study psychiatrist and a structured interview
- People who have made a suicide attempt at some point in their life and are experiencing thoughts of suicide at the time of joining the study, as measured by a standard rating scale
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a significant medical or neurological (brain or nervous system) condition
- People currently taking certain medications that affect how the body processes drugs — specifically strong CYP3A liver enzyme activators, moderate CYP3A inhibitors, or strong CYP3A inducers (confirm with trial site for specific medications)
- People currently taking the heart medication digoxin
- People who are currently pregnant, nursing, trying to become pregnant, or not using contraception
- People with an active substance use disorder (such as alcohol or drug misuse) in the last six months, or who have or have had a psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder
- People who have experienced a severe traumatic brain injury
- People who are considered to be at immediate risk of acting on thoughts of suicide or of harming others
- People with unstable medical conditions or any medical reason that would make taking the study medication (suvorexant) unsafe, as determined by the trial's medical team
