Who may and may not be able to join

Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (a type of advanced lung cancer) confirmed by a tissue sample, where laboratory testing shows a PDL1 score of 50% or higher.
  • People for whom a treating doctor determines that the standard treatment pembrolizumab (an immune therapy drug) is appropriate.
  • People aged 18 years or older.
  • People who are able to give their own consent to join the study and are willing to follow the study requirements, including treatment visits and follow-up appointments.
  • People whose general physical wellbeing and ability to carry out daily activities falls within a certain range, scored 0 to 2 on a standard medical scale (confirm with trial site for details).
  • Women who could potentially become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test (blood or urine) within 7 days before the first treatment dose.
  • People who are able to become pregnant or father a child must use a reliable form of contraception during the study treatment period, as agreed with the study doctor — methods with a failure rate of less than 1% per year when used correctly are considered reliable. Abstinence is also acceptable if it is the person's established and preferred method and meets local standards.
  • People who do not have any condition that would prevent them from following the study schedule and requirements (this should be discussed with the study team before joining).
  • People whose blood test results meet the following minimum levels before joining: white blood cell count (neutrophils) above 1.0, platelets above 100, haemoglobin above 90 mg/dL, kidney function (creatinine) below 3 times the normal upper limit, liver function (bilirubin) below 2 times the normal upper limit, liver enzymes (AST and ALT) below 3 times the normal upper limit, and a blood clotting measure (INR) below 1.5 times the normal upper limit (unless already on blood-thinning medication and within the intended treatment range).

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who are currently receiving, or plan to receive, other systemic cancer treatments alongside pembrolizumab, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, other immune checkpoint drugs, or hormonal therapy.
  • People whose treatment plan includes local treatments such as radiation therapy or surgery.
  • People who have brain metastases (cancer that has spread to the brain) that are causing symptoms and have not yet been treated, or brain metastases that were previously treated but still require steroid medications to manage symptoms. (Note: people with small, symptom-free brain metastases under 2 cm in size and no surrounding swelling may still be eligible — confirm with trial site.)
  • People who have cancer that has spread to the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (leptomeningeal disease).
  • People with a known history of HIV, or currently active Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C infection.
  • People who have an active autoimmune disease (where the immune system attacks the body) that has required systemic medical treatment within the past 12 months, such as immune-suppressing drugs or steroid doses above 10 mg prednisone or equivalent. (Note: hormone replacement therapies such as thyroid medication, insulin, or low-dose steroids for certain gland conditions are not considered systemic treatment for this purpose.)
  • People who are unwilling to have their treatment appointments scheduled according to the study timetable during the treatment phase of the study (the first 6 cycles).
