Who might be able to join this trial:

  • The child has been diagnosed with Selective Mutism (a condition where a child can speak in some situations but not others) as their main diagnosis, based on standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5).
  • The child is currently attending primary school.
  • The child has been referred to the Levvel academic centre for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for diagnosis and treatment of Selective Mutism.
  • Children with additional diagnosed conditions may still be eligible, as long as Selective Mutism is the main focus of treatment.
  • Children taking medication may still be eligible, provided the medication dose has been stable for at least 4 weeks before treatment begins.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Cases where no parent or caregiver is willing or able to participate in the trial.
  • Cases where the parents or caregivers do not have a sufficient understanding of the Dutch language.
  • Cases where a parent, caregiver, or the child has an estimated IQ below 75.
  • The child requires inpatient (hospital stay) treatment.
  • The child has a medical or other condition that makes wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset unsafe or unsuitable — this includes epilepsy, claustrophobia, a condition affecting the face, a sensitive balance system, or panic attacks.
  • Parents or caregivers who are currently receiving parenting support outside of what is offered as part of this standard treatment programme.
  • Children who have already received a structured, protocol-based behaviour therapy programme for Selective Mutism within the past 12 months.
