Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with Parkinson's disease (experimental group):

  • People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic (standard) Parkinson's disease
  • People who score 25 or above on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini Mental State Evaluation
  • People whose Parkinson's disease is at a mild-to-moderate stage, measured when not on medication, and who can stand without help for at least one minute
  • People who are able to walk without assistance
  • People who are willing to wear a movement-tracking device while their Parkinson's medication is not active

For healthy volunteers (control group):

  • Healthy people whose age is within 5 years of a participant in the Parkinson's group, and who are the same sex
  • People who score 25 or above on the Mini Mental State Evaluation memory and thinking test

Who may not be able to join:

For people with Parkinson's disease:

  • People whose condition is an atypical form of parkinsonism rather than standard Parkinson's disease
  • People who are unable to walk or stand unassisted for more than one minute when not on Parkinson's medication
  • People whose Parkinson's disease is being treated with deep brain stimulation, an apomorphine pump, a duodopa intestinal infusion, or a medication called foslevodopa
  • People who are pregnant
  • People with significant bone or joint problems
  • People who have another neurological condition that may affect the way they walk

For healthy volunteers:

  • People who have notable difficulty walking due to a bone or joint condition
  • People who have a neurological disease that, in the judgment of the investigator, may affect the study's results
  • People who have a noticeable tremor (shaking) that could interfere with movement measurements — for example, essential tremor, a thyroid condition, or tremors caused by medication
  • People who are pregnant
