Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are willing and able to give signed consent to take part in this study
- You are able to respond to tasks by pressing a button or using a computer mouse to move a slider on screen
- You are between 19 and 90 years old
- (For patients having DBS surgery — Part 1): You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, or dystonia, and are scheduled to have a new DBS device implanted in a specific area of the brain
- (For comparison participants — Part 1): You are a healthy volunteer matched in age to a Parkinson's disease participant in the study
- (For patients — Part 2): You are scheduled for an awake DBS implantation procedure that includes brain recordings, and you are willing and able to do tasks while awake during surgery
- (For patients — Part 3): You have an existing DBS device, are willing to have its settings temporarily adjusted during the study, and are able to tolerate those short-term changes
Who may not be able to join:
- Your vision (even with glasses or contacts) is not good enough to judge images of faces shown in the tasks
- You are unable to understand the task instructions or complete what the tasks require
- (For DBS patients — Part 1): Your movement symptoms are not well enough controlled to allow you to press a button or use a mouse
- (For healthy volunteers — Part 1): You have a history of a degenerative brain or nervous system condition
- (For patients — Part 2): You are not scheduled for an awake DBS surgery procedure
- (For patients — Part 3): Your DBS device has not successfully improved your movement symptoms
