Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 50 and 80 years, of any sex
- People who have had a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes for at least 10 years, whether they manage it using multiple daily insulin injections or an insulin pump
- People who are willing and able to give informed consent before any study activities begin
- People who are able to fully take part in all activities required by the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
- People who have previously been diagnosed with dementia
- People with moderate to severe heart failure (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a diagnosed muscle disease
- People diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease
- People whose kidneys are not functioning well enough, based on a specific blood test result measuring kidney function (confirm with trial site)
- People with a previous history of stroke or disease affecting the blood vessels in the brain
- People diagnosed with coeliac disease
- People diagnosed with chronic inflammatory bowel disease
- People with an underactive or overactive thyroid that is either untreated or not well controlled with current treatment, based on specific thyroid blood test levels (confirm with trial site)
- People who drink more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week, or who have a history of alcohol misuse
- People who currently have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatment
- People who are pregnant
- People diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism (a condition affecting a gland in the neck that controls calcium levels)
- People who have used corticosteroid medications and/or combined hormone (estrogen-progestogen) therapy for 12 months or more at any point in their medical history
- People currently being treated with antiretroviral therapy (medication used to treat HIV)
- People currently taking immunosuppressive medications, such as cyclosporine or tacrolimus
- People currently taking anti-epileptic (anti-seizure) medications
