Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with recurrent moderate or severe major depressive disorder (MDD), or with persistent depressive disorder (long-lasting depression)
• People whose depression has not improved enough with antidepressant tablets or capsules taken by mouth during their current episode of depression
• People who have been taking oral antidepressants for at least 8 weeks and are willing to continue taking the same medication at the same dose throughout the study
• People whose depression symptoms score at or above a certain level of severity (a score of 22 or higher on a standard depression rating scale) at both the screening visit and the first day of the study
• People who, in the opinion of the study doctor, are willing and able to follow all study procedures and requirements

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have been diagnosed with another mental health condition in the past year that was the main focus of their treatment, other than MDD
• People whom the study doctor considers to be at immediate risk of suicide or of harming themselves or others
• People whose depression symptoms have previously not responded to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during their current depressive episode
